The last mile of your vinyl setup

When “that’ll do” isn’t doing it.

Two collectors. One shelf. No visible pool noodle.

Cass and Neil look at the finishing touches that take Kallax vinyl storage from functional to finished: cushioned record backstops and modular LED strip housings.

THE BIT NOBODY TALKS ABOUT

The strangely improvised end of the hobby

We obsess over pressings, storage and setup, then somehow the last few centimetres of the shelf become a DIY free-for-all.

Cass

There’s something slightly ridiculous about vinyl collectors.

Neil

Only slightly?

Cass

We’ll spend forty minutes deciding whether an album belongs under Bowie or Soundtracks...

Neil

...then wedge a chopped-up pool noodle behind £2,000 worth of records.

Cass

Exactly.

Neil

To be fair, it works.

Cass

So does gluing a strip of MDF across the back of a Kallax.

Neil

Also works.

Cass

Which is sort of the point. There are loads of DIY fixes for keeping records forward. Foam. Timber. Pipe insulation. Whatever was lying around in the garage.

Neil

Perfectly functional.

Cass

But it does feel oddly at odds with the rest of the hobby.

Neil

Because everything else has to be just right.

Cass

The pressing. The sleeve. The cartridge alignment. The storage. The lighting.

Neil

And then at the back...

Cass

Swimming-pool equipment.

02

BRING THEM FORWARD

The back matters because the front does

A rear stop is mostly invisible. The difference it makes at the front of the shelf is not.

Neil

The problem isn’t really what’s behind the records.

Cass

It’s what happens at the front.

Neil

Push one sleeve slightly too far back and suddenly the whole row looks uneven.

Cass

So the bumper gives the collection a consistent stopping point. Records sit forward instead of disappearing into the cube.

Neil

Which sounds like a tiny thing.

Cass

It is a tiny thing.

Neil

Until you see an entire Kallax lined up properly.

Cass

Then you can’t unsee it.

Neil

There is another difference, though.

Cass

The bit touching the records is cushioned.

Neil

Because the outer edge of a sleeve is exactly the bit I don’t want repeatedly meeting a hard lump of plastic or timber.

Cass

Soft where it meets the collection. Solid where it needs to stop it.

Neil

A backstop with manners.

Bring them forward

Cushioned Kallax record backstops

Keep record sleeves consistently forward with a rear alignment stop designed around the part that actually touches the collection. A cushioned contact face sits gently against delicate sleeve edges, while the structure behind it provides the stop.

Choose black or white, with adhesive positioning and a supplied screw/washer option for stronger long-term fixing.

THEN THERE’S THE LIGHTING

You should see the light, not the lighting

A wall of records can look brilliant under light. The LED strip and wiring do not need to become part of the display.

Cass

Once everything is lined up nicely, you do the obvious thing.

Neil

Leave it alone and enjoy your records?

Cass

Put lights in it.

Neil

Of course.

Cass

Because a wall of records looks good.

Neil

A wall of records properly lit looks dangerously good.

Cass

The problem with LED strips is that the strip itself isn’t particularly attractive.

Neil

Little dots of light stuck to a shelf with wires wandering off somewhere.

Cass

And if you stick them straight inside the cube, they can eat into the space above the sleeves as well.

Neil

So the housing does the boring bit properly.

Cass

It lifts and hides the LED strip, shields it behind the front lip and gives the wiring somewhere discreet to go.

Neil

Which means you see the light.

Cass

Not the lighting.

04

BRING YOUR OWN LIGHTS

Your LEDs. Your controller. Your rules.

The housing deals with presentation. The electronics stay your choice.

Neil

You could have bundled an LED kit with it.

Cass

Could have.

Neil

You deliberately didn’t.

Cass

Because then I’d be choosing everybody’s LEDs for them.

Neil

And collectors are famously relaxed about other people choosing things for them.

Cass

Precisely.

Neil

So the housing is the housing.

Cass

And you bring the strip that suits your setup.

Neil

Cheap basic white LEDs if that’s all you want.

Cass

Colour-changing ones if you want a bit more theatre.

Neil

Or smart strips that already work with the rest of the room.

Cass

Hue, Govee, Home Assistant, Alexa, whatever ecosystem you’ve already committed your life to.

Neil

Assuming the strip and controller support it.

Cass

Exactly. You’re not locked into our electronics because there aren’t any.

Neil

Which also keeps the housing affordable.

Cass

And means the clever bit can be as simple or ridiculous as you want it to be.

Build around your lights

Modular Kallax LED strip housing

Hide the strip, preserve sleeve clearance and keep the installation tidy. The modular housing is supplied without LEDs or electronics, so you can use a suitable lighting setup that fits your budget, colour preference and smart-home ecosystem.

A lipped front face hides the strip and a discreet cable return keeps wiring tidy. The housing installs without unit disassembly, drilling, soldering or electrical work. Choose a suitable strip and controller without lighting-brand lock-in or paying for bundled electronics you may not want.

Housing only. LED strip, controller, power supply, electronics, records and Kallax unit are not included. Smart-home compatibility depends on your chosen LED strip and controller, not the housing.

THE LAST FIVE PER CENT

The details that make it feel finished

Neither product changes the music. They change the part of the room you look at every time you choose a record.

Cass

Neither of these changes how your records sound.

Neil

Important legal clarification.

Cass

They don’t make a rare pressing rarer.

Neil

They don’t improve your taste.

Cass

Nothing can do that.

Neil

Rude.

Cass

They’re just finishing touches.

Neil

But sometimes that’s the difference between records stored on a shelf...

Cass

...and a collection that feels finished.

Neil

Everything forward.

Cass

Nothing rubbing against a hard backstop.

Neil

Lighting hidden.

Cass

Cables behaving themselves.

Neil

And no visible pool noodle.

Cass

Unless you’re emotionally attached to it.

The finishing touches

The last mile
Matters.

Organise it. Align it. Light it.
